not wise to suddenly stop exercising at the completion of a very hard exercise, better to taper off with a few moderate exercises before discontinuing training. Trainers of race horses walk their charges for a considerable period after a race or a time trial, so that they will cool off and the blood circulation and respiration return to normal. We are hardly stronger than horses, so what is good for the race horse should be good for the human trainee too.

20. There are so many good, resultproducing pieces of training equipment, that it is not possible to use them all in one tinkering day a week. Therefore it is wise to have two tinkering days a week if possible. The various muscle building appliances, expanders, health shoes, giant crusher grip, iron shoes, wrist roller, pulleys, head strap, etc., are a pleasure to use, develop the muscles from every possible angle, thus increase strength, increase muscular size and build a really outstanding physique.

21. The regular York courses with their 11 barbell exercises and 7 dumbell exercises will suffice for any beginner, but advanced men can practice more exercises as they develop the ability to keep going, to practice a great many more exercises. The most ambitious trainees follow at least two complete courses of 12 exercises each, or the equivalent in set training. There are some men who can do more, practice each exercise three times or 36 exercises in all. Some practice their favorite exercises five times and thus have a work out of at least 40 exercises. Only you know how much you can train and still make gains, this must be determined by the progress you make and how you feel.

22. While each York course differs to some extent from others, all are designed so that the major muscle groups of the body receive a fair share of work. Regardless of your ambitions or desires in physical training, you should always practice at least of the well planned, scientifically arranged York courses before going on to any type of specialization. After you have performed the essentials, followed any complete York course exactly as it is written, preferably one of the barbell courses, you can proceed as you desire with the assurance that satisfactory physical are sure to result.

23. Moderate days of training. This, subject has been covered to a fair degree under the heading "tinkering days." There should always be some moderate days of training. Days on which the muscles are given a nice, comfortable, stimulating workout, a workout which tones the muscles, and prepares them for the harder days to come. The moderate days develop the strength of the muscles from different angles, stretch them, keep the body loose, flexible, and athletic.

24. Perform the exercises correctly. Each exercise is designed to develop some particular muscle or group of muscles. If you do not perform these exercises correctly, instead of being a good exercise for that part of the body for which it is intended, it will be a poor exercise for several parts of the body. For instance, if you are performing the two hands curl, and you "cheat," AND

the exercise becomes a swing instead of of a curl, the back will be brought into play and the weights swung up to the upper chest. On most training days perform all exercises correctly, steadily, while exerting maximum force and return to the starting position with comparative slowness. Only on the limit day of training is some "cheating" permitted, and if the weight employed requires cheating on more than two or three of the movements, you are using too much weight for your present strength. Reduce the poundage on your next comparative training period.

25. It is difficult to tell any man just how much weight to use, for ambitious bodybuilders vary so much in size, strength, quality of muscle, nerve force, muscular leverage, ambition, willingness to work, endurance, and recuperative power between difficult exercises, that every man must be his own trainer to a degree, for only he knows how he feels, only he knows what he wants from exercise and how much he can do. The man using this course should have trained enough to know what weights he can correctly handle and for how many repetitions. One must select only enough weight in the first movements to make possible the satisfactory conclusion of the program. You should select the amount of weight which you can correctly handle for the scheduled number of repetitions and still complete your training program without working on your nerve more. than once a week.

In the York Advanced Methods of Weight Training, the 25 bits of training advice we have offered fill just 3 of the 64 pages that make up the book. It is evident that a year or more will be required to offer you the full contents of that wonderful little book. Those who follow its rules and methods say that it is the greatest book on barbell physical training ever written. Certainly it contains more authentic information than can be found in any other physical training book regardless of size. You will obtain all of its contents if you wait long enough until the full story of the York Advanced Methods of Weight to Training, unfolds as the month month installments are offered but if you don't want to wait that long, you can order the book at once as advertised in this magazine, or you can get it entirely free, with your order of a York Big Twelve Special.

The most recent example of a man who has reached the heights in the physical training world by following the information offered in this course, word for word, is Ronald Lacy, the 1957 Mr. America and "America's Most Muscular Man." Five years ago Ronald Lacy and a friend purchased a York Big 12 Special and obtained with it not only York Courses #1 and #2, not only the 32 page swingbell book, The York Leg Course, but also this Advanced Training Course about which we are writing. Lacy had been following the York courses exactly as offered to every York pupil for a year, when he went to California to see the Mr. America contest won that year by Dick Dubois. He saw the advantages of the physiques which had practiced a good share of weight-lifting, and from that point on, weight-lifting, the practice of the three Olympic lifts, Press, Snatch and Clean and Jerk, became the major part of his training.

• NOVEMBER, 1957

I first saw Lacy in the Mr. America contest of 1955. He was one of the finalists and was the winner of the special awards for best back and best legs. He had gone far but he was well down the list of those who were competing in this great event, there were twelve finalists. So outstanding were these men that I said, "anyone of them would make a good Mr. America." Steve Klisamin won the title. But the 10th place man, went to the London Mr. Universe contest and won the title Mr. Universe, which proves that America has by far the best developed men in the world, and a host of them too. But the next year, 1956, Ronald Lacy, with his sensible system of training, his close adherence to the rules of training and the rules of living which are offered in The York Advanced Methods of Weight Training, really emerged as a physique star. So many spectators said that he was the best-built man and the "most symmetrical man" they ever saw. Judging a physique contest is a matter of opinion and although three of the judges gave Lacy the highest score, three gave Schaefer the highest score, one gave both the same score, those scoring Schaefer, in his spite of imperfections, scored higher and Lacy was second. But this year, this wonderful physical specimen from Lexington, Kentucky, scored the most smashing victory of all times, from a 971⁄2 score a possible 100, usually 72-74-76 is enough to win. He received a very rich reward for following the York methods exactly as they are written. He spent about a month training here in York and even I was amazed at how closely he followed the rules. He made a bible of this little training book and could quote whole paragraphs of its advice. I did not meet Lacy personally in 1954 or 1955, I only talked to him casually in 1956, but this year I came to really know him and appreciate what a great physique star he really

is.

He will go far, and serve as an inspiration to countless thousands of others. If only one man such as Ronald Lacy, reached the heights through following the advice offered in this physical training book the time and effort required in writing it would have been well worthwhile, but many thousands of others are on the road to the top through this same treatise on sensible physical training.

DUMBELLS AND GYMNASIUM EQUIPMENT

Illustrated are the type ot York dumbells which were designed for and are used in many professional gymnasiums throughout the world. Beautifully made, they are adaptable for home gyms too. Note that the handles are chrome plated and that the plates, with their rounded edges and more compact design, will not bump wrists, forearms, shoulders and other parts of the body as do most dumbells. The retaining rings and bolts are also chrome plated; the plates are made with baked-on enamel. A full set of York professional gym dumbells makes a beautiful, useful display. Like other York, or "Muscletown," products, you will agree. that these sets are the best-trom the standpoint of usefulness, balance, comfort in handling and general appearance.
